Mini Cattle

We visited a neighbor's little farm recently and laid eyes on her Irish Dexter cattle. The cuteness factor alone was reason enough for me to start our own herd, but everything here needs to have a purpose. These bovines are half the size of a standard cow and do pretty well on our sparse pasture. They can be dual purpose, providing both milk and meat. Our girls are from Diddle Knot Farm in Harwood, Tx.

I do plan to eventually get milk from our cows, so the decision was made to cross them up with a Mini Jersey bull. "Braveheart" is a very nice Mini Jersey bull from Back To The Future Farm, owned and operated by Victoria McCutcheon. We feel the heifers from this Dexter/Jersey cross will make some very nice family milkers.

I will try to get some new pictures soon and post them up. ;)

Update:

The end of 2011 brought us ALOT of suspense! November 15th, both Jessie and Jori delivered their calves simultaneously. Jessie's little bull calf is really quite a character. He is gentle, curious, and seems to be staying very tiny. Jori's heifer is a natural explorer and is such a sweetie. December 6th, Buttons had her calf, a little heifer we call Bella. All our babies are doing great and I'm enjoying watching them grow!
