Our poultry flocks are a work in progress, as is almost everything here. We are still in the beginning stages and trying on different birds.

We have a variety of chickens. Our primary interest is in the Marans. They lay a dark chocolate colored egg and fill out very nicely as a meat bird. We have a trio of the Black Copper Marans, a trio of Blue Copper Marans, a Welsummer hen, and even 5 Rhode Island Reds. So far, I'm loving the large size and wonderful temperament of the Marans roosters. My source for these wonderful birds is Mrs. Jan Joyner in Schulenburg. Wonderful lady and very knowledgable. My kids have been pestering me to go visit again.

After visiting with my sister and her family at E&S Gamebirds, I brought home two more types of chickens. The Easter Eggers are laying some very large blue eggs for us. The Seramas....well, we have miniature cattle and goats, so we just decided it was fitting to have some tiny little Serama chickens as well.

Our only turkey for the moment is a Bourban Red. She is in with the chickens for companionship. They just think she is a very UGLY chicken but don't hold it against her. We are in search of a Bourban Red tom and intend to join efforts with Patty to hatch some poults this spring.
